I had a scenario come up that I'm not familiar with. Doctors uses 7mhz ultrasound transducer and then aspirates breast cyst. Online it says there's no cpt for an ultrasound transducer but to use the ultrasound code that correlates to what the procedure was. The doctor says he didn't do us guidance needle placement because he did the ultrasound first but with what I've seen guidance say would I still use 76942 because they say use the ultrasound code that correlates to the procedure since no cpt exists itself for that US?

Subjective
Cori is a 47 y.o. female.
Cori presents complaining of a new painful lump in her left breast just lateral to the nipple. On exam she has a 3 cm mobile mass there.
Using a 7 MHz ultrasound transducer this area is imaged and there is a simple cyst that measures 3.2 x 2.5 x 3.2 cm. There are multiple other small cysts which is consistent with breast imaging that she had (both mammogram and ultrasound) in December.
I prepped the area with alcohol and using a 22-gauge needle aspirated the cyst of 11-1/2 cc of minimally turbid yellowish fluid. Will try to send this for cytology although it is essentially clear. At the end of the procedure there is no longer a palpable mass.
Will have the patient return in about a month for reexamination.
thanks for any input regarding this!
