Choose an Immunity-Status Diagnosis for Measles Titer
Question: A patient with no measles symptoms asks our primary care practice to order a measles titer because they cannot locate their immunization records and need proof of immunity for employment. Which diagnosis code should I report? Ohio Subscriber Answer: Report Z01.84 (Encounter for antibody response examination) when the purpose of the encounter is to determine the patient’s immunity status. As the patient is asymptomatic and is not being evaluated for suspected measles, you should not assign a measles diagnosis code. Document the reason for determining immunity status, the antibody testing ordered, and any relevant counseling provided. Coverage varies because antibody testing performed to satisfy school or employment requirements may not be a covered benefit or may be subject to payer-specific medical-necessity requirements. Verify the patient’s benefits and obtain any required financial acknowledgment before testing. Rachel Dorrell, MA, MS, CPC-A, CPPM, Production Editor, AAPC
