CPC-A-Please Help! looking to gain experience

look around on jobsites, I've even seen some remote jobs but you have to live in the right states depending on the job. I started in medical billing with my cpc-a to get my foot in the door since I have never worked in Healthcare. after a year and a half I had applied for over 50 positions....it's hard don't get me wrong. but I found a great entry level position with a great company.... Just keep looking and searching, I found more opportunities through jobs sites than through aapc or other related areas. Keep your head up

Indeed and Ziprecruiter are the main 2 ones I used. I have linkedin, I did get an offer for other jobs just not one that I wanted. The judge group is also an agency that helps to place for jobs in coding and billing. I would of had a job with them remotely but was not in the right states but they constantly have openings. I searched jobs for Cpc-a & entry level medical coding

Thank you, this is very helpful.

I am in the same boat too. I have been a respiratory therapist for over 20 years and in January 2025 got CPC-A. I can't even get an interview. I have filled out applications on indeed, zip recruiter, and AAPC. I purchased the AAPC resume builder and waiting for the new resume. I have NEVER had a problem getting a job.
Open to any ideas.

I am in the same path with cpc-a and did practicode, looking for volunteer medical coding jobs can anyone help me on this
Wow, you completed Practicode? Did you feel like preparation for the CPC exam prepared you for it? Were you already working in the field, and which schooling did you attend please? I am having a very hard time with Practicode, and I attended an in person class some years ago, then finished the AAPC course and got certified at end of 2024. It feels like I wasn't prepared for this. Maybe if it could be sorted by level of difficulty, scope of practice, place of service, or anything, that would be better and more like real life.

I’m in the same boat. I would look into your local chapter meetings for possible jobs, that’s what I’m doin
Hello, I am new to all of this as well. My question: do you mean just attending one or if you don't mind sharing how you are going about that for employment? Thanks in advance

I find this CPC-A designation derogatory and demoralizing. Sorry folks I tell it like it is. I paid thousands and worked hard and passed the exam. I am certified! An RN passes their exam. They are an RN not an RN-A. They are dealing with life and death not a CPT code. CPC jobs want 3 years minimum experience. How. AAPC PLEASE FILL ME IN HOW THIS IS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. I’ll tell you how……pay out more bucks to AAPC. It is a $$$$ making business. Honestly if i knew this before I paid out thousands for the course, practice exams ( oh and they expire ) and then the exam for no prospects of a job I would not have done it. I laugh at those commercials I see on the internet about the lucrative career as a coder. I have networked. I participate in local professional organizations. I apply to jobs with no response. Employers over look anyone who is entry level because AAPC says they can. Entry level or assistant coding jobs do not exist. Employers want experienced coders only because let’s face it it costs money to train and get people up to speed. They want you to hit the ground running. Sorry but the real Work world is not like that. Every new employee needs sufficient onboarding. AAPC content is excellent don’t get me wrong. I put the hard work into it and I feel I am a decent coder. Why I am not employable is beyond me. All I can say is good luck. I have lost all hope of finding a job. Live and learn. One thing I have learned is that there are associate level programs out there that help with internship placements. That would be the way to go.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience! it's very encouraging. I have 2 questions. First, was your very first position remote or on-site? I don't want to work on-site, even if I'm in the "right" state. Second, which states are they mostly looking for? Are they hiring specifically from the state that their office is in, or is there any other consideration? You mentioned 2 times that they were requiring certain states. I'm in Florida but would love to work remotely. Haven't started job search yet, but as you, I have never worked in the industry. Thanks again for your wonderful advice!

So I got to work remotely 2-3 days a week after the first 3-6 months for a billing position, however they had coder positions and they got work completely remote. some remote jobs want people local/within the state. I live in Ny and applied for several jobs in other states. most places offering remote jobs, the states the allow you to work in varies, but I have seen florida jobs. i would start in an office registration or billing first.....Their is a lot of terminology I didnt know about before, if I wanted to kiss some ass at the hospital i worked for I could have probably had a coding position, but it was not someone I wanted to work for the next few years anyways.

The Judge group is a contract hiring/ temp agency specifically with medical billing/coding./healthcare positions, sometimes they have long term stuff, but I have gotten a few calls from them in the last 2 years so they are a great way to get your foot in the door as well. it depends on the employer, but they wanted them to not live in California new york or New jersey, so it varies by the employers
