Good Afternoon All,

I wanted to see if anyone was familiar with a code that could be billed for when a patient presents for MOCA screening only for primary care. I have looked at CPT 96125 (Standardized cognitive performance testing (eg, Ross Information Processing Assessment) per hour of a qualified health care professional's time, both face-to-face time administering tests to the patient and time interpreting these test results and preparing the report.) but that seems to be classified as an “always therapy” code. I have also found in my research that because the MOCA is a screening it should not be billed with the 96125, and that the MOCA does not encompass the same level of detailed evaluation as the standardized cognitive performance tests covered by this code.

I also found CPT 96132 - Neuropsychological testing evaluation services by physician or other qualified health care professional, including integration of patient data, interpretation of standardized test results and clinical data, clinical decision making, treatment planning and report, and interactive feedback to the patient, family member(s) or caregiver(s), when performed; first hour. However, this code seems even more involved than the 96125.

Is the MOCA screening just considered to be included in the E&M service like the MMSE/SLUMS?

Thanks in advance!
